Box of Rain (Grateful Dead)

The Grateful Dead’s Box of Rain means so much to me. It was there when I needed music the most and I’m proud to have it on my first solo album, Melody Bird.

“Box of Rain” is a song from the Grateful Dead album American Beauty. Phil Lesh and Robert Hunter wrote this song together. According to Hunter: “By ‘box of rain,’ I meant the world we live on, but ‘ball’ of rain didn’t have the right ring to my ear, so box it became, and ‘I don’t know who put it there.'”

When speaking about Phil, Robert said that Phil “wanted a song to sing to his dying father and had composed a piece complete with every vocal nuance but the words. If ever a lyrics ‘wrote itself,’ this did – as fast as the pen would pull.” It is not hard to hear the raw emotion that Phil must have been feeling when you hear this song. Box of Rain has stuck with me for quite some time and I hope it never goes too far away.

I hope you enjoy my arrangement of this special song.
